Lead Mining
Lead mining was once a major industry in the Yorkshire Dales. There is evidence that the Romans mined the area for lead and, in later years, the creation of the great abbeys of Europe caused the industry to expand and flourish. The nineteenth century, however, was the industrial heyday and most of the industrial remains stem from this period. They now provide a rich “vein” for photographers.
