Lead Mining
Lead mining was once a major industry in the Yorkshire Dales. There is evidence that the Romans mined the area for lead and, in later years, the creation of the great abbeys of Europe caused the industry to expand and flourish. The nineteenth century, however, was the industrial heyday and most of the industrial remains stem from this period. They now provide a rich “vein” for photographers.

Powder Store, Langthwaite
This unusual building, at Langthwaite in Arkengarthdale, is an old Gunpowder store. It is a relic of the old lead mining industry and, as befits its original purpose, it was built without windows and in the middle of a field where it was isolated from other buildings.
